Prosthesis, 2011

Gingko leaves, steel wire, laser-cut wood mechanism, DC motor, power supply. 4 ft. x 1 ft. x 1ft.

A series of 15 mechanical movements work in the service of allowing 15 ginko leaves to achieve a flight- like state. Prosthesis is a response to my time spent in Asia, with its abundance of unique flora and fauna. The gingko leaf is iconic in Korea, a fitting object for my piece at the Nam June Paik Art Center. It also seems to me to be the semblance of a moth or other flying creature, like a leaf that dreamt it could fly. The mechanical apparatus of Prosthesis allows it to do so.
