love gun, 2003

sound clips

An interactive sound installation in the shape of a Civil War gatling gun : stained wood, formed steel, colored copper tubing, bearings, spring switch, 8 watt amplifier, voice recorder module, speaker, and steel rod. (3 ft. x 4 ft. x 2 ft)

This project was for the "Love Art War" show in New York. I started working on smaller version before being asked to be part of the show. Given the topic of the show I decided to make it in the shape of a Civil War gatling gun. As history has taught us Civil War clashes often involved loved ones or relatives fighting each other. I wanted to use the phrase "I love you" as something that has a force that can inflict itself on the human body..

System: The audio is cued each time one of the six spinning barrels hits the sound trigger buttton. The trigger button is connected to a voice sampler which begins playing "I love you" each time the button is hit. The circuit is designed so that the full "I love you" phrase is never played until the last button hit. While the crank is turned the gun says " I...I..I..I...I..." like the drone of a macine gun.
